Project Overview

The Be a Breast Friend Project originated as a joint initiative among public health units in Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk, Halton, Hamilton and Niagara to raise awareness about the importance of regular breast screening for women 50 and older.

The two-year project was funded by the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation-Ontario Region, and our partners include the Canadian Cancer Society and the Ontario Breast Screening Program.

Initially, the project focused on encouraging salon owners and hair stylists to remind their clients 50 and older about the importance of having regular mammograms. They also shared that mammograms can save lives by finding breast changes in the early stages and that women 50 and older can book their own free appointments by calling the Ontario Breast Screening Program at 1-800-668-9304.

The project has now expanded to include everyone across Ontario. A Breast Friend can be anyone who passes on these important, yet simple, messages.
